2020 has been a wake-up call. A reminder that sustaining civic action has always been important and supporting a healthy democracy can be a daily habit. That has always been the case, even in the times that we didn’t collectively recognize it.
Conversations about racism, sexism, and climate change are cropping up at dinner tables and (virtual) social gatherings around the world. Whether it be through grassroots activism, influencing politicians to do the right thing, or supporting businesses that strive for sustainability and equality, many are calling out for positive change and progress in all facets of life and government. Since opening their first store in 1976, The Body Shop has believed in these methods of change, and using them to work toward a fairer, more beautiful world for everyone.
Well aware of the dangers of beauty standards, The Body Shop has built their reputation on empowering women by providing them with raw, natural, and powerful ingredients. To them, a customer feeling beautiful in their own skin is the ultimate goal and a sign that small actions can have powerful effects. The Body Shop’s commitment to feminism is far reaching, devoting themselves to all women, understanding the similarities that bind them, and respecting the differences that make each woman unique.
While firmly rooted in the women’s rights movement, The Body Shop believes every person is precious and beautiful, and deserves total equality. Their pledge to their employees is equal pay for equal work, and a work environment free from discrimination.
Outside of the workplace, The Body Shop empowers their employees, customers, and supporters to volunteer and campaign for the rights of others, especially for those of animals. They have proudly never tested on animals, and constantly push for the banning of said practice in the cosmetics industry.

In The Body Shop’s own words, B Corps create a “positive impact for their employees, communities and environment.” This acknowledgment affirms The Body Shop’s core belief that a business’ actions should stand against systemic inequalities and for long-lasting social change.
In their 40 plus years of operation, The Body Shop has always believed brands can be more than just a means of making money; they can also be a strong force for good. As founder Anita Roddick said, “Business shapes the world. It is capable of changing society in almost any way you can imagine,” a tenet which guides the company to this day. With Election Day only weeks away, The Body Shop has focused its action hub on voter initiative, providing a vote-by-mail status checker, polling place locator, and many other useful tools and resources to help everyone make their voices heard this year.
To drum up additional excitement around Election Day preparation, The Body Shop has organized a weekly civic challenge for its employees, customers, and supporters. Every week until the election, they are raffling off an everyday activism kit to a lucky group member who completes the company’s weekly ask.
The Body Shop believes that its influence should be used for civic, social justice, and environmental actions. However, they know that this is only one piece of the puzzle in the fight for sustainable change. Businesses must work in tandem with the government to root out injustice and destructive practices, and it is up to the people and their communities to decide who represents their interests.
